Sunday Sermon Summary – Nov 30 2025
MARY DID YOU KNOW!!
Luke 1: 26 – 35
On the first Sunday of Advent, we had an interactive homily on Mary. We had a lively conversation rediscovering Mary’s calling to be the mother of the Saviour of the world.
1. Mary’s dreams and expectations Luke 1: 27
She was betrothed to Joseph and would have had many dreams and aspirations for her future with Joseph the carpenter. Mary was not the person some try to portray like overly pious. She was an ordinary woman who had aspirations and dreams as anyone else. This is a great encouragement to all of us. The Lord chooses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for His glory.
2. Mary’s surprise encounter with angel Gabriel
The angel greeted Mary and informed her God’s plan. Luke 1: 28-31
Angel Gabriel suddenly appeared to Mary and greeted her. Mary was pondering what it meant. The angel told her that she is highly favoured by God and that she will conceive and bring forth a boy. This news would have shaken her a lot. She said, “How can this be? I am a virgin.” The angel explained to her that the child she will bear will be holy and will be called the Son of the highest. When God invites us into a role we have never expected; it will be shocking; but Mary sets an example for us to trust God’s Word.
3. Mary’s surprise response to angel Gabriel
I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word. Luke 1: 38
Mary’s response to her call to be the mother of Jesus is amazing. In those days women had no say in major decisions. The parents decided their marriage. After marriage their husband decided what they must do. In such a situation, Mary boldly said, “I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word.” Mary is a wonderful example to the church today. Our call is to be willing to allow God to have His way in our lives. Mary was not concerned about the consequences that she may have to face. It could even be stoned to death. Mary only wanted to obey God’s call.
May we be like Mary, as ordinary as we are to listen to God’s voice and willingly follow Him. Amen
