Sunday Sermon Summary – June 15 2025
Trinity Sunday & Father’s Day
We call God, “Abba Father”
Today we celebrate the Trinity of God and Father’s Day. On this Sunday we will meditate on the three references of God addressed as “Abba” which is the Hebrew word for father.
1. RELATIONSHIP – Jesus set us an example – Mark 14: 36, Matthew 6:9
In the garden of Gethsemane, just before he was betrayed; Jesus called out to the Father, “Abba, if possible remove this cup from me”. Jesus has set an example for us when he taught us to call the Father, “Our Father who art in heaven.” This was a big shift in addressing God. Jesus was ushering a new dispensation, a dispensation of grace, a dispensation of Pentecost and he made this shift that we will call God, “Father” just as Jesus called him.
2. REJOICE – We are set free from bondage – Romans 8: 15
The Bible teaches that being in bondage of sin will cause fear. When we become followers of Jesus, we are set free from the bondage of sin and we are free from fear. Once we are free from fear, we spontaneously call God, “Father.” Jesus has earned us salvation and through Jesus we call God, “Abba Father.” All who are free from the bondage of sin are the children of God. Jesus has earned this privilege for us. Jesus said that everyone who sins is a slave to sin; but if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed. (John 8:36). Our God has planned salvation for us through His Son Jesus Christ that we will be free to call Him Abba Father.
3. REVIVAL – We are filled with the Holy Spirit – Galatians 4:6
The third person in the Trinity is the Holy Spirit. God the Holy Spirit leads us into all wisdom and confirms that we are the children of God. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we call God, “Abba Father.” Being filled with the Holy Spirit is more than just being excited while in church. It is a continuous experience of being in the presence of God. We are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit at all times so that we can experience our relationship with God as Abba Father.
Jesus set us an example by calling God Abba Father. He also taught us to call God Abba Father. We are free from the bondage of sin and are set free from all fear so we can call God Abba Father. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, our spirit is close to God and cries, “Abba Father.” Jesus commanded his disciples to go and preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It is one Name yet three in their essence and attributes.
May our Lord help us to connect closely with God as Abba Father. Amen!
