Sermon Summary, Sunday, September 15, 2024

THE VALUE OF LIFE

Mark 8: 27-38

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was speaking with his disciples and told them openly that he is about to be betrayed by his enemies and be crucified and will rise again.  In this passage Jesus revealed the value of human life.

1.  It is Beyond this life

Mark 8: 31

Jesus revealed that the life of a person is beyond this life by revealing that He was going to die vicariously on the cross. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son!   God has an eternal plan for each of us. He wants us to live each day with eternal values. We may experience pain, failures or disappointments; but those things do not trouble us because we have an eternal hope. Mary Allen who passed away recently has served faithfully for many years in the church of St. Bede; and when she was in her last stages of life still she reflected God’s presence.

2.  It is Bigger than we imagine

Mark 8: 33

Our lives are so precious; we are more precious than we can ever imagine. Jesus chided Peter and told him that he was not thinking of godly things but things of man. Jesus wants us to always think through the mind of God. Jesus advised Martha that she was worried about many things when only one thing was important. Jesus also told Martha when she objected to opening the tombstone, because there will be a stench. Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God.”  We are so precious that we can live greater than we imagine.

3.  It is Better than anything we can desire

Mark 8: 36

Jesus spoke with the disciples and the crowd and said that even if a person gains the whole world and looses his soul; it will profit him nothing. “What can a man give in exchange of his soul!”  Jim Eliot who laid down his life for the sake of the Gospel said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”  Jim Eliot and his four friends were martyred for the sake of the Gospel by primitive people.  Their wives went to the same people and led them to the saving knowledge of God.

There’s nothing in this world that we can desire more than understanding how precious our life is.

Amen
