The Winning Christian

Matthew 4: 1 – 11

Our reading today is about Jesus being sent to the wilderness right after His baptism where He fasted for forty days and forty nights. Soon after the fasting days the tempter came to Him and tempted Him three times.

Temptation One

Food:  Satan came up to Jesus tempting Him about food.  This was the same temptation he brought to Eve and Adam.  Our first parents fell prey to Satan; but our Lord answered Satan using Holy Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:3 Many times we tend to worry about our future, about our job, our health and so many other things. Our Lord’s answer to the adversary was, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word that comes out of the mouth of God.”   Our Lord can do extra ordinary things for His people.  People who don’t know our Lord will worry about many things; but we will trust God for all our needs.

Temptation Two

Faith: Satan, seeing that Jesus quoted scripture, he too quoted scripture trying to tempt our Lord. Jesus again put him down by interpreting scripture more accurately. Deuteronomy 6:16 Jesus said that we must not tempt God.  Our Lord wants us to be responsible for everything He has given us. We must be responsible for our wellbeing, for our family and duties that are entrusted to us. We cannot be complacent claiming that we are exercising faith. Faith without works is dead. We must demonstrate our faith by producing fruit of good works.

Temptation Three

Fame:   When Satan saw that Jesus could not be conned by his subtle suggestions, he took Jesus to a very high mountain, showed Him all the glory of the nations and tried to seduce Jesus to fall at his feet and worship him. Jesus was infuriated at this and commanded Satan to get away from Him.  Jesus said that we must worship only God and none else.  Deuteronomy 6:13, 10:20 With this answer, Satan left our Lord and was looking for another opportunity.  We can be tempted to compromise our faith for earthly things. We can easily be carried away into vanity.  Our Lord shows us an example of winning every temptation by spiritual power.

Everyone has failed when we were tempted because we are finite, and we miss the mark very often. But our Lord Jesus Christ has won the victory for us. He has conquered all temptations and crushed the enemy on our behalf.  So, whenever we fall, we must rise up again and go forward in the name of Jesus Christ who has promised to fight all our battles. Amen
