Jesus the perfect Lamb of God

Matthew 3: 13-17

Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.  Jesus came to the river Jorden to be baptized by John the Baptist.  John hesitated to baptize Jesus saying that it was he who must be baptized by Jesus.  Jesus convinced John that it was fitting to do everything that was righteous.

Jesus fulfilled the Law

Matthew 5:17

Our Lord fulfilled the law as the perfect Lamb of God.  The religious leaders accused Him that He broke the law. Nevertheless, Jesus openly stated that He has come to fulfill the law, not to nullify it. Jesus taught the people to follow the law meaningfully.  Jesus Himself was circumcised on the eighth day according to the law.  He explained about the Sabbath to the public. He said that man was not made for the Sabbath but the Sabbath was made for man.  Jesus also explained that if the priest circumcised on the Sabbath and is not guilty; then healing someone on the Sabbath is not a sin.

Jesus fulfilled the Father’s will

Matthew 26: 39

Jesus constantly expressed that He has come to do the Father’s will. He said that He does nothing but only that pleased the Father.  Even in the garden of Gethsemane Jesus pleaded to the Father if the bitter cup that He had to taste would pass from Him. Then He prayed to the Father and said, “Nevertheless, not my will but your will be done.”  We fail to yield to God’s will.  But Jesus always fulfilled God’s will.  Many times He went up to the mountain and prayed all night to the Father. Jesus has set us an example to follow.  Fulfilling God’s will in our life must be our greatest priority.

Jesus fulfilled the tradition

Matthew 3: 15

Jesus approached John to be baptized by him. John hesitated to baptize Jesus; but Jesus told him that it is fitting to fulfill all righteousness.  Baptism was not a law. It was an inter testament practice.  John was sent by God to baptize so that he could identify the Messiah.  Our Lord fulfilled all righteousness traditions. When we became followers of Christ, we have committed to follow all that is righteous.  Traditions may change from time to time; but we always follow what is righteous.  Using profanity may be a normal thing in our community; but we, God’s people only speak what is pleasing to God.

Our Lord is the perfect Lamb of God sent for us that we may receive eternal life.  Amen!
