The Saviour at His birth

Luke 2: 1-14

We celebrate Christmas with lights and big parties; but the first Christmas was a hard journey for baby Jesus.

1. The journey

Luke 2: 4

Mary was full time pregnant, and she had to travel with Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem.  They had to travel over 150 kilometres on foot.  As it is portrayed in many paintings, Joseph would have taken Mary on a mule walking the rough terrain. It would have been a hard journey.  They would have had to endure hunger and thirst as they journeyed. Baby Jesus was getting ready to be born.  Mary and Joseph were having a challenging time eagerly awaiting to reach Bethlehem.  Even before his birth Jesus went through such a tough time. Our salvation is so precious that it took the Saviour of the world much pain even before his birth.

Luke 2: 6

2.  The Time : Time for birthing

When Joseph and Mary arrived at Bethlehem it was time for the baby to be born.  This would have caused much anguish.  Mary struggling with pain. Joseph hectically trying to find a comfortable place for Mary to deliver the child. They would have knocked on the doors of some houses.  They somehow wanted to find a convenient place. Our Lord, just before his birth was struggling in his mother’s womb.  The price of our salvation is so precious. Our saviour suffered even before his birth. His suffering brings us relief from the struggles we face in life.  Our Lord paid it all.

3. The Place : No room in the inn

Luke 2: 7

Finally, the time had come to deliver the child but there was no room in the inn.  Someone could have given them place, seeing that the time to deliver the child had come. But there was none who took pity on them.  There was no place in the inn and all they could do was to deliver the child where cattle were kept, and they laid baby Jesus in the manger.  There was no room for the King of kings and Lord of Lords to be laid at his birth.  Our salvation is so precious! It demanded the price of suffering even at our Saviour’s birth.  There was rejoicing in heaven. Angels sang praises and announced his birth. But the saviour was made to lie in a manger.  He forsook all his heavenly glory and was willing to suffer right at the beginning of his incarnation.  His suffering brings us victory over sin and death.  Our Lord invites us to live in victory because he has paid it all for us.   Amen!
