Be not Deceived: Luke 21: 5-19

The disciples were showing Jesus the greatness of the temple of Jerusalem.  Jesus said that the day is coming when the temple will be torn down with not one stone on the other.  The disciples were curious to know when these things would happen and asked Jesus the signs of the time.  Jesus spoke to them and warned them not to be deceived.

1. False Signs Luke 21: 7

(Matthew 12: 38, 39)

The first thing Jesus warned His disciples was to be aware of false signs.  When anything unusual happens, many interpret it as something foretold in the Bible. The disciples were so curious about what Jesus told them about the destruction of the temple.  The Bible warns us about going about signs.  In Matthew 12: 38 & 39 the scribes and Pharisee asked Jesus for a sign. Jesus said that this evil and adulterous generation is asking for a sign; no other sign will be given them except the sign of Jonah.

2. False Prophets Luke 21: 8

The Lord continued to warm His disciples about false prophets.  He said that many will come in His name and claim that they are the anointed.  Our Lord warned His disciples and said not to follow them.  This warning is relevant to us today. The Church which is the body of Christ has to be vigilant that we are not persuaded by false prophets into heresy.  We must cling to the truth of the Gospel. We must reject anything that is contrary to the Holy Scriptures.  We must be strong followers of our Lord to refuse anything that is not glorifying our Lord however attractive it may be.  We must not get carried away by people who call themselves pastors or prophets who do not openly confess their faith.

3. False Revelations Luke 21: 9

Finally, Jesus taught His disciples to be aware of false revelations.  Our Lord said that in the last days people will claim that they know when the end of the world will come. There are theologians who have fragmented the church by their own understanding of the Eschatos.  The Bible speaks explicitly about the happenings of the last days.   Nevertheless, no body can prove it.  We constantly hear people trying to explain the happenings of the last day and many try to confuse us.  Jesus warns His Church to be strong and not be deceived by false teachings.  We may not understand everything the Bible says; but we know one important thing; in Deuteronomy 29:29 scripture teaches us that Secret things belong to God our Lord. What is revealed to us is His commandments.  So, we just need to be faithful followers of our Lord.  Everything that is purposed by God will be fulfilled in His time.  Amen
