Sunday Sermon Summary – Aug 24 2025
Sabbath and the Church
Luke 13: 10-17
Our Gospel reading reveals the hypocrisy of the religious leaders who were indignant about Jesus healing a woman who was bent over for eighteen years; because He healed her on the Sabbath day.
1. Love of God in Pre incarnation
I am the Lord of the Sabbath – Matthew 12:8
Jesus made a strong claim that He is the Lord of the Sabbath. When the Lord completed his creation in six days, He rested on the seventh day and blessed the seventh day. The seventh day is given to us as a gift of rest. Before any other commandment God ordained the Sabbath rest for us humans. Our Lord has ordained it that way; so, He is the Lord of the Sabbath.
2. Love of God in Incarnation
I came to fulfill the Law – Matthew 5: 17
The religious leaders accused Jesus of breaking the commandment, specifically the fourth commandment which says that we must honour the Sabbath and keep it holy. Jesus refuted the accusation and said that He has come to fulfill the commandments not to break them. If Jesus failed to keep all the commandments, His death cannot be vicarious. To take our place of punishment our Lord kept all the commandments. He challenged His adversaries and asked them which of them could convict Him of sin.
3. Love of God in Salvation
Man was not made for the Sabbath – Mark 2: 27
The most important statement Jesus made about the Sabbath is being ignored by many Christian leaders today. Our Lord fulfilled all the commandments for our sake. So, we are not under the yoke of the commandments anymore. Jesus calls us to take up His yoke. His yoke is light. Jesus is our Sabbath rest. We are called to be restful every day in Jesus. We are free to keep all the commandments by the love we have for our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
