Facing your Adversaries

Luke 10: 25-37

As Jesus was teaching his disciples, a lawyer came up to him and wanted to test him.  In this passage we see how Jesus faced this person.

1.  Look

Luke 10:24

Jesus is Sovereign. Jesus knows all things. In Matthew 12:42 Jesus declared that he is greater than Solomon.  So, we follow Jesus in every way. Nevertheless, Jesus was perfect. He never sinned; but we are feeble. We need God’s help in everything we do.  Jesus has cautioned us that we will have tribulations in this world.  If the world hated Jesus, it will also hate us because we do not belong to the world. So, we must always look up to Jesus for his guidance whenever we face adversity.

2.  Listen

Luke 10: 25, 29

Not everyone who admonishes us is our adversary. Sometimes those who are hard on us could be our well wishers.  On the contrary some who always smile at us may be our real adversaries.  So, the first guidance we receive from Jesus is to listen when people speak to us. Jesus intently listened to the lawyer. Though he knew that he was trying to find fault with him.

3. Leave

Luke 10: 37

Jesus told him to go and do likewise. When Jesus saw Matthew collecting taxes, he called him to be his follower. When Jesus saw Zacchaeus on the fig tree, he told him to come down quickly and said that he was going to stay at his house; but to this lawyer Jesus said, “Go”.   There are some who are destructive to our growth. Jesus has set an example for us to follow. We must leave them. Let them go from us. We don’t need the company of those who try to distract us from God’s ways. Facing adversaries means leaving the company of those who do not contribute to our welfare.

May God help us to look at Jesus for all our needs, listen when people speak to us and let go of some who are detrimental to our growth.  Amen!
