Fulfilling our Calling

BOANERGES – Sons of Thunder

Mark 3:17

Jesus named the sons of Zebedee, John and James Boanerges, meaning sons of thunder. They had a special calling. We’ll see how they exercised their calling.

1.  Arrogance

Shall we bring down fire as Elijah did Luke 9: 51-56

Jesus, along with his disciples wanted to pass through Samaria to enter Jerusalem, the Samaritans refused to allow him to enter; at once James and John asked Jesus if they could bring down fire from heaven upon the Samaritans.  Jesus chided them and said, “You know not what spirit you are of. The Son of man has come to save lives, not to destroy them.”  The sons of Zebedee were trying to misuse their calling.  Their calling was to save people’s lives.  Each of us have a unique calling. We must use our calling to be a blessing. All followers of Jesus Christ must be a blessing to our world in the way God has purposed for us.

2.  Avaricious

One on your right side and the other on your left Mark 10: 37

The scripture reference here says that both brothers came to Jesus and requested that they must be appointed to be on either side of Jesus when he is in glory.  Jesus again chided them and said that they didn’t know what they were asking. Again, Jesus set himself as an example and said that the Son of man has not come to be served; he came to serve.  All true followers of Jesus have a mission to serve; not to be served.  Jesus has set the example for us. When we receive abundance blessings, we tend to behave as worldly people. We make worldly people our examples. Jesus teaches us that the anointing we have received is to enable us to serve others.

3.  Acknowledge

James was beheaded Acts 12: 2

John was on the island of Patmos. When the disciples understood what Jesus was telling them; their attitude changed, and they reflected the character of Jesus. They were willing to lay down their lives for the sake of the Gospel.  The apostle James was beheaded quite early.  According to reliable sources, John was tortured and then banished to the island of Patmos.  Being sons of thunder was to be tortured for Christ.

God has a calling on each of us. God invites us to fulfill the purpose of His calling in our lives.

Amen!
