The anointing of Believers
1 Samuel 16: 1-13
The biography of David reveals God’s anointing on those who truly follow Him. David was anointed three times as he continued to be a true follower of God.

1.  Anointing according to Integrity
1 Samuel 16: 13

When David was just a teenager God sent Samuel to anoint him to be king of Israel. When Samuel was expecting God to choose one of David’s brothers who were already serving in the army, God said that people look at the appearance, but God looks at the heart.  David had integrity in his heart and God rewarded his integrity by choosing him to be king of Israel.  The Bible says that from the day David was anointed, the Spirit of God came on him.

2.  Anointing according to Responsibility

2 Samuel 2:4

Soon after his anointing in Bethlehem, David faced the fierce Goliath. After his victory David faced untold challenges. He was running for his life from king Saul. Nevertheless, he was responsible in protecting his country and his integrity. He lived in the woods.  God was watching over him. God rewards our sincerity in all we do.  God rewarded David by a second anointing. This time his anointing was in Hebron. David was anointed king of Judah. He would have been about twenty-two and a half years old when he was anointed king of Judah.

3.  Anointing to reward Integrity and Responsibility :  2 Samuel 5:3

Finally, David was rewarded for his integrity and for his responsibility.  He was just thirty years old when all the elders of the tribes of Israel came together and anointed him as king over the whole nation. God rewarded him even beyond the forty years of his reign.  Jesus was called the son of David. In the book of Revelations chapter three Jesus says that he has the key of David. He will open and none can shut; he will shut and none can open. In Revelation 22:16 Jesus says he is the descendent of David, the bright and morning star. David is the only Old Testament character who lived a New Testament faith.

Our Lord anoints us as we faithfully follow Him. May we live in the anointing that we have received from God. Amen!
