Remembrance

Knowing God’s Will

John 6: 35-40

1.  Our greatest Example – Jesus

John 6: 38

On this Remembrance Day we remember the thousands of soldiers who were willing to lay down their lives for their country.

They have set an example for us to love our country. But our greatest example of love and sacrifice is Jesus Christ. He is the Saviour of the World. Jesus is our only perfect example to follow, not even the apostles. Jesus said that He came to do the will of the Father.  Even while He was praying in the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed with drops of blood flowing as sweat and He said, “Father if it is possible let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.

2.  Our greatest Solace – none will be lost

John 6: 39

Jesus spoke further about the will of the Father that none of His will be lost.  We are safe in the arms of Jesus. We must never continue in lostness.  In Luke chapter 15, Jesus taught about the lost coin, the lost sheep and the lost son. At the end of the parable of the prodigal son, the son who repented was seated with his father at a great banquet, dressed in new clothes and with a ring on his finger. But the older brother was outside the house refusing to come inside and join the celebration.  God calls us to belong to Him.  None of us must live in lostness. We are called to be close to Jesus and enjoy God’s sovereignty.  Jesus will grant us grace to be in His care at all times.

3.  Our greatest Confidence – We have everlasting life

John 6: 40

Jesus said that He will resurrect every follower and give us eternal life.  During these few years on earth, we try to make best use of it and live as long as possible.  But some day we will leave this earth. Our great confidence is that Jesus will bring us back to life and we will live with Him eternally in glory.  Charles Spurgeon, talking about his own death said that it is only passing from this temporal life to eternal life.  So, each day of our life on earth must be lived with the longing for our eternal life that Jesus came to give us.  Amen
