Breaking Barriers

Jesus waiting at the well

John 4: 5-11

We had our Youth Led Service and it also was International Women’s Day so the scripture reading from the Gospel was very suitable. The Bible says that Jesus came close to a Samaritan city called Sychar. He was tired; His disciples had gone to purchase bread. He was alone at Jacob’s well.

1.  Jesus Initiates the conversation

John 4: 7

As Jesus was waiting at the well, a lady came to draw water in the heat of the day.  It seems like Jesus was waiting for her.  He initiated a conversation by asking her for water to drink.  Our Lord had a bigger plan in asking for water.  The woman was surprised because Jews usually don’t connect with the Samaritans.  Our Lord broke the barrier and communed with her and said that if she knew who was asking her for water, she would ask Him for water, and He would give her water of life. The Lord moved the conversation to a personal, spiritual level.

2.  Jesus Intrigues curiosity

John 4: 10, 13

The woman was drawn into the conversation and was curious about the water Jesus was talking about.  She started asking Jesus some serious questions about worship.  She pleaded Jesus to give her the Living Water so she wouldn’t need to come every day to the well to draw water. After she requested for the Living Water Jesus began to reveal himself to her by asking her to bring her husband. She told Jesus the truth that she doesn’t have a husband. Jesus appreciated her for speaking the truth and led her to understand that He is the Messiah who she is longing for.  She was overwhelmed with joy.

3.  Jesus is Invited to stay in Samaria

John 4: 40, 41

She left her pot at the well, ran into the city and invited everyone to come and meet Jesus at the well.  That day became a memorable day in Sychar, Samaria.  The people were excited to hear Jesus speak with them, and they did something they would never have done before. They invited Jesus to stay with them.  Jesus did something no other Jew would do. He went and stayed with them for two says.  Tradition tells us that the woman along with many others were baptized. The Samaritan woman was named Photini, and she became a witness to her faith in Jesus and led many to the saving knowledge of our Lord.  Later she was willing to lay down her life for her faith. She was martyred by king Nero.

We must have a great respect for Samaritan woman. Her life must always encourage us to be faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen
