Sunday Sermon Summary – Dec 21 2025
Chosen for God’s purpose – Joseph
Matthew 1: 18-25
Joseph was chosen by God to be instrumental in the life of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world.
Joseph was chosen to be the father of our Lord Jesus Christ during His earthly life. The Holy Bible speaks very little about him. We read about Joseph only until Jesus was twelve years old, but we read about Mary even though Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. He had to go through great challenges as he realized his high calling.
1. Joseph a just man
Matthew 1: 19
When Joseph heard that the lady he had betrothed was with child; it disturbed him a lot. He was confused. He had to make a bold choice. He could have risen with rage and anger and sought to punish Mary. The Holy Bible says that Joseph was a righteous person. He didn’t want to be vindictive and so he decided to secretly call off the marriage with Mary. The Lord sees the hearts of people. The Lord knew that Joseph was the right person to be trusted. The Lord sees our hearts and according to our righteousness He will trust us for His great purpose.
2. Joseph a fearful man
Matthew 1: 20
The Bible portrays Joseph as a fearful person. He wanted to secretly call off the marriage. He could have gone to Mary’s house, called all family members and enquired about her pregnancy. He could have had an open conversation with Mary herself. But Joseph was contemplating on secretly cancelling the marriage. Sometimes we tend to walk away from challenges. We try to avoid confronting situations. Our righteousness must not make us timid. We must be bold and stand up for our convictions. We must be meek but not weak.
3. Joseph an obedient man
Matthew 1: 24
The third and strong character trait of Joseph was his obedience. The very first time the Angel of the Lord spoke to him in a dream, he immediately consented to take Mary as his wife. He even agreed to be called the father of Jesus. He agreed to name the child ‘Jesus’ according to the command of the Angel. It took only a dream to convince Joseph. When he was convinced that God was in this situation, he yielded fully to carry out God’s will. He obeyed God’s command even though it came in a dream by an angel. God is willing to choose us to accomplish great things according to His purpose. We must be prepared to obey his call even if it seems tough. God will be glorified through us when we are willing to be obedient. Amen!
