Meaningful Initiatives

Luke 19: 1-10

This is a very familiar passage about Zacchaeus who wanted to see Jesus. He was the leader of the tax collectors. He was a short person but was very rich.  He had wealth and authority.

1. Desire

Luke 19: 3

The Holy Bible says that Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus but there was a big crowd around him.  Zacchaeus was short so he was unable to see Jesus. He quickly decided to run ahead in the direction Jesus was going, and he climbed up a sycamore tree to have a look at Jesus. Zacchaeus reminds us that we, God’s people must have a burning desire inside us for Jesus.  When we go through pain and other challenges we can lose that zest for God. Sometimes things pertaining to God becomes a boring thing and sometimes it is just a ritual or a routine.  Today God reminds us to continually follow Jesus with zeal and deep desire.

2.  Delight

Luke 19: 6

All Zacchaeus wanted was to have a clear view of Jesus.  Just when he was satisfied with his attempt to see Jesus, Jesus stopped, looked up and called him by his name and said, “Zacchaeus, come down I am coming to your house today.”  The Bible says that Zacchaeus was very excited, and he quickly came down the tree. He was very delighted that Jesus was coming to his home.  This was something he least expected. He was overjoyed to take Jesus to his home. We must have that same delight in serving our Lord. We will face pushbacks and insults when we delight in the Lord.  Nevertheless, we must continue in delight and enthusiasm in everything we do for our Lord, for His people and for His Kingdom.

3. Destiny

Luke 19: 9

Zacchaeus was about to experience a great change in his life; something he never thought will happen.  His encounter with Jesus turned his heart from being selfish to be generous.  That day he promised to give away half of his wealth to the poor and to pay back four times if he had defrauded anyone. On the outside it looks like he made a crazy decision; but Jesus commended him that he was a son of Abraham. Jesus said that salvation had come to his home.  That day Zacchaeus became a child of God, and he was headed towards a new direction, towards eternal life.  Amen!
