JESUS IN MY HOME

Luke 10: 38-42

Jesus visited Bethany frequently. Bethany was a small town on the Eastern side of Jerusalem on the slopes of Mount of Olives.  Bethanya means House of the Poor.  This was a favourite place for Jesus.

1. Counsellor

Luke 10: 38 – 42

Once when Jesus visited Bethany; the Bible says that a woman whose name was Martha invited Jesus to her home. Martha lived with her sister Mary and brother Lazarus. Martha was unhappy with Mary for not helping her with the chores. She complained to Jesus; but Jesus told her that Mary had chosen something that cannot be taken away from her. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and was listening to him.  The second of the Messianic name of Jesus is Counsellor.  He will teach us and guide us in everything we do. It is not only his name, but also his attribute.

2. Comforter

John 11: 1 – 44

The second time Jesus met with Mary and Martha is when their brother Lazarus had died.  This time Jesus did not even go to their home; he went to the tomb to resurrect Lazarus. Jesus is our comforter.

He knows our pains and sufferings. Verse 35 in John 11 says that Jesus wept.  He feels with us. Jesus told Martha, “Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”  In verse 25 in the same chapter Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and life, he who believes me, though he is dead, yet he will live”.  No body can comfort us like Jesus.  Whenever we invite Jesus to our house, he will always be with us even in our darkest times.

3. Companion

John 12: 1 – 8

Finally, we read that Jesus visited this home when they prepared dinner for Jesus. The Bible says that Lazarus too sat at the table and Martha served. Mary took a costly perfume and poured it on Jesus’ feet. This was a time of fellowship. When everything goes well, we must seek Jesus; not only when we face challenges. Jesus must be in the centre of all our activities.  Jesus must be exalted in everything we do.  When Jesus is given pre-eminence he will transform us into his own image. We will be more and more like him and people around us will be gravitated to Jesus. May our Lord transform us into the likeness of Jesus Christ.  Amen
