Our Supreme Saviour

John 1: 1-14

Our reading for today is taken from the Gospel of John which never mentions the birth of Jesus. Only Matthew and Luke mention his birth. Nevertheless, today’s reading reveals our Lord’s supremacy even at his birth.

1.  The eternal Word

John 1: 1 – 3

This chapter begins with the proclamation that our Lord Jesus Christ was in the beginning with the Father.  Jesus is called the Eternal Word because he always existed in eternity past.  This truth may be difficult to comprehend because we are finite who have a beginning and an end.  Jesus is the Eternal Word because he created everything with his Word. All celestial bodies were created by his Word.  Only humans were created by his hand, and he breathed in Adam who became a living creature with a soul.  This eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us.  Our Lord, the Logos left all heavenly glory and came to live with us.

2. The eternal Light

John 1:  4,5

The above verses teach us that our Lord is also the Eternal Light.  Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness.  He came down from heaven to be the light of the world.  Jesus said, “I am the light of the world he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” At His birth Jesus was the light of the world.  He is the eternal light sent by the Father to redeem us who were living in darkness.  The Bible teaches us that Jesus who is the light came to shine in the darkness and the darkness could not comprehend it.  Jesus came to dispel all darkness.  There is no other light except Jesus who can dispel all darkness.  Those who follow him will not walk in darkness.  On this Christmas Day we are reminded that Jesus will dispel every darkened situation in our lives.  Jesus is the eternal light of the world.

3.  The eternal Glory

John 1: 14

The apostle John explains that Jesus, being the eternal Word and the Eternal Light is also the Eternal Glory.  John, James and Peter beheld his glory on the mount of transfiguration.  The glory of Jesus is explained as the glory equal to the Father’s glory.  On this Christmas morning our Lord reminds us that He is the Eternal Glory.  So, we His flowers are partakes of His glory.  The glory of Moses is explained in 2 Corinthians chapter 3.  The Bible says that if the glory of the Law was so great that people were unable to look at Moses, how much greater is the glory of Salvation!!  Jesus came to this world as the eternal Word, the eternal Light and the eternal Glory.  On this Christmas morning we are reminded that we are blessed by baby Jesus who became flesh and dwelt among us.  Our Lord invites us to live in His Glory in all situations.   Amen
