Sunday Sermon Summary – April 06 2025
AT THE FEET OF JESUS – Mary of Bethany
John 12: 1-8
Mary, the sister of Lazarus who Jesus brought back to life has set an example of how we must be close to Jesus.
1. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet
Luke 10: 39 At a time of Seeking
The Bible teaches us that Jesus visited Mary’s home whenever he visited their town, Bethany. When Jesus was at their home; Martha was busy with many errands and was stressed out. She also complained to Jesus about her sister Mary. But Jesus told Martha that Mary chose something that can never be taken away from her. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to him. Mary has set an example for us to follow. Jesus is always in our home. We must take time to sit at his feet and hear his voice. Listening from Jesus is something no one can take away from us.
2. Mary fell at Jesus’ feet
John 11:32 At a time of Sorrow
When Lazarus died and was in the tomb for four days, Jesus came to Bethany with his disciples. He stood at the entrance of the town. Martha was the first one to go and meet him. Then she informed her sister Mary that Jesus called for her. When Mary saw Jesus she fell at his feet and wept. Mary teaches us that when things are bad we must come closer to Jesus and fall at his feet. When Mary wept Jesus was moved. The Bible says that Jesus wept. When we draw close to Jesus in difficult situations; it touches the heart of Jesus. He will
Be moved with compassion towards us. It is tempting to move away from God in bad times; but Mary teaches us to draw close to Jesus in bad times.
3. Mary Anointed Jesus’ feet
John 12: 3 – At a time of Surrender
After Lazarus was raised from the dead they made dinner for Jesus. Lazarus was at the dinner. Martha was serving and Mary brought an expensive perfume, broke the bottle and poured the perfume at the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. This is the highest expression of surrender. She wanted to express her gratitude for the second life given to her brother Lazarus. We receive manifold blessings from God. Mary teaches us that we must be grateful for all our blessings. We must come into his presence with thanksgiving and praise. We must be generous in our giving to God and his church.
May God help us to be sincere followers of our Lord who sit at the feet of Jesus, fall at the feet of Jesus and anoint the feet of Jesus. Amen
