Experiencing God’s Generosity
Isaiah 55: 1-9 Luke 13: 1-9

The two readings we had today reveal God’s generosity towards His people. When people complained to Jesus about Herod desecrating their sacrifice.  Jesus wanted them to see God’s generosity.

1.  Generosity of Provision
Planted in His vineyard Luke 13: 6

In this parable Jesus said that a man planted a fig tree in his vineyard.  Fig trees grow wild anywhere, but this tree was planted in a vineyard; well watered and taken care of.  God invites us to see his generosity in giving us things we have never asked for. When we go through tough times we tend to complain. We forget to see the blessings we have received from God. Just as this fig tree was planted in a vineyard, God has planted us in a good place according to His eternal purpose.

2.  Generosity of Protection

Looking for fruit   Luke 13: 7

The parable continues to say that the owner of the vineyard came looking for fruit in the fig tree for three years and found none.  This shows God’s protection on us. When we failed him; he did not cast us away.  He kept coming year after year looking for fruit.  Our God does not punish us according to our sins and shortcomings.  He continues to trust us to be fruitful.  He has promised the sure mercies of David according to Isaiah 55.
King David displeased God by committing serious crimes; but God forgave him and showed him mercy and set him as an example for us.

3.  Generosity of Patience
Dig around and manure it Luke 13: 8

The owner of the vineyard suggested that the fig tree be cut down; but the gardener interceded and requested for one more year. He said that he will dig around it and add more manure to help it to yield fruit.  God’s generosity of his patience is explained in this conversation. It is so touching to see how God is willing to wait for us to yield fruits in our lives. He even gives more grace to enable us. His ways are not like our ways.  He adds grace upon grace to his people. He helps us in our infirmities. He is patient with us so that we will realize how blessed we are and live fruitful lives that our fruit will remain, and we will yield much fruit.

May our Lord enable us to experience God’s generosity in our family and in our church. Amen!
