Sunday Sermon Summary – Nov 03 2024
New Beginnings
John 11: 32-44
(The Resurrection of Lazarus)
How do New Beginnings happen
1. Delay to respond
John 11: 5, 6
In the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead; we read that Martha and Mary sent messengers to inform Jesus that Lazarus whom he loved was sick. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he delayed two more days.
When we are desperate for help, we cry out to God. But when help is delayed we get desperate and question God. When God is making a new beginning, he delays help. It would seem like he is not interested in our prayers; but God is working something bigger than we expect.
2. Denial of mercy
John 11: 14, 15
Even before leaving for Bethany, Jesus informed his disciples that Lazarus is dead. He also added that he was glad that he was not there. This conversation shows Jesus being rude and lacking mercy. But actually Jesus was preparing for a new beginning where his disciples will be prepared for their ministry after his ascension.
When our petitions to God are denied, our reaction usually is to ask God why we are denied mercy. We may not understand why God allows pain and suffering in our lives; but we know that He loves us beyond measure and he has a bigger purpose behind everything he does.
3. Demand for obedience
John 11: 39
When Jesus arrived at Bethany, the Bible says that Jesus stayed at the entrance of the town. Mary and Martha went out to meet Jesus. Seeing them, other Jews joined them to go where Jesus was. From there Jesus went to the tomb. As they were walking to the tomb, Jesus wept when he saw everyone crying. Jesus commanded that the stone that covered the tomb be removed. Martha objected to that saying that it was already four days since Lazarus died and there will be a stench.
Jesus insisted that the stone be removed. Then Jesus brought back Lazarus to life! When God is performing a new beginning, he demands implicit obedience. Only when we obey God’s commands, can we see God’s miracles in our lives.
May God grant us the grace to see God’s purpose beyond our imagination. Amen!
