Sermon Summary for Sunday, August 4, 2024

Following Jesus

John 6: 24-35

After Jesus performed a wonderful miracle of feeding 5,000 people he sent his disciples in a boat and he stayed alone.  The next day when the people came searching for him they didn’t find him so they took the boats and went looking for him. They were excited when they saw Jesus on the other side.

1.  Follow Jesus for His divine attributes

 John 6: 26 STRONG

When Jesus saw them he said, “You are not looking for me because of the sign, but because you had bread.”  Our Lord invites us to follow him because he is able to do anything, not just giving bread.  Jesus wants us to recognize him in his fullness. He wants us to trust him for everything.  When the disciplines cried out to Jesus when they were in the middle of a storm;  Jesus chided them for their lack of faith. Jesus wants his followers to trust him for everything in life.

2.  Follow Jesus for everlasting life

John 6: 27  SAVIOUR

Jesus continued to teach the people that they must follow Jesus for everlasting life.  In all his conversations Jesus always spoke about everlasting life. We have the most profound verse Jesus spoke to Nicodemus in John 3:16. Jesus came into the world to give us everlasting life.  We do receive temporal blessings from God. Every day is a blessing from God. Nevertheless, our ultimate objective of following Jesus is to receive the crown of life that He will give each of us when we see him face to face.

3.  Follow Jesus because He is the Anointed one  John 6: 27   SOVEREIGN

Jesus continued his conversation with the multitude who came seeking him. He told them that he himself was the Messiah, the anointed one.  Jesus claimed that he is sovereign and that he must be worshipped because he is God in human form.  When the apostle John was on the island of Patmos Jesus revealed himself to him and declared that he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Jesus is the only hope of the nations. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.  He will return in glory and he will be the judge of all peoples. He rightly deserves our Praise and Worship. When we gather in the church, Jesus Christ must be given pre-eminence above everything else.

May our Lord help us to follow him faithfully and receive eternal rewards.  Amen
