Sunday Sermon Summary – Sept 27 2026
Witnesses of the Faith
Matthew 21: 23-32

In the book to the Hebrews chapter twelve the Bible talks about a cloud of witnesses that surround us. The previous chapter gives a long list of those who have been witnesses of faith.
Our Lord returned to Jerusalem the next day after His triumphant entry. The crowd gathered around Him. He healed the blind and the lame and taught the people. The chief priests and elders were indignant and questioned Jesus by what authority He was doing these things. Jesus answered them by pointing to three witnesses of the faith.
1. Reverence Matthew 21: 23

Jesus himself is our first witness of the Faith. Revelation 1:5 clearly states that Jesus is the faithful witness. He is also the ruler over all the kings of the earth. So we never question his authority as the chief priests did. We may not understand many things mentioned in the Bible; but we acknowledge our lack of understanding and follow our Lord faithfully. Our Lord has authority over everything, and we are called to worship Him in spirit and in truth. The whole Bible points to Jesus Christ who is the author and finisher of our faith.
2. Reflect Matthew 21: 25

After giving a fitting answer to the chief priests and elders, Jesus pointed to John the Baptist as a witness of the faith. Jesus said that John preached in righteousness. The holy Bible teaches us that John dressed different from others. He ate different foods than others and he lived in the wilderness, unlike others. He had a unique calling from God. Each of us have a unique calling from God. We are created by God for a unique purpose. We need not live just like everyone. We will live according to God’s calling on our lives. It is okay to do things differently from others. He who has even numbered our hairs on our heads also has something special for each of us.
3. Revelation Matthew 21: 31

The third witness Jesus pointed to are the tax collectors and prostitutes. These people were marginalized and considered evil in the Jewish community. Jesus said that the tax collectors and prostitutes were going to heaven before the religious leaders. These people listened to the teachings of John and repented. But the religious leaders only hated John. We may be marginalized by others. In our workplace we may be pushed aside but we are special in the eyes of God. Some of us may have lived a life that was not great; but when we gave our lives to Jesus and started following Him faithfully, we are witnesses of the faith. We are a chosen generation, a Royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s own people to declare the glory of Him who brought us in his marvelous light. Before we were without hope; but now we have hope.

May we live as witnesses of the faith to the glory of God and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. Amen
