Our Significant Landmarks 

Genesis 32: 22-30 

We all have landmarks in our lives. We remember them often.  Jacob had some landmarks that taught us some important truths.  

1. Bethel – House of God  

New Experience  

El Bethel – God of the house of God  

Genesis 28: 18-19, Genesis 35:7 

God took the initiative to meet with Jacob while he was fleeing from his brother Esau.  While he was asleep God revealed himself in a dream.  This was his first encounter with God. God told him that He will be with him and fulfill His purpose in Jacob’s life.  Jacob rightly named that place where he experienced God for the first time; so, he named that place Bethel, the House of God.  We need this first encounter with God. The whole purpose of creation is that we will have that relationship with God. When we have this experience, we turn from a path leading to eternal destruction to a path leading to eternal life.  God invites everyone to this encounter with Him.   

2. Peniel / Penuel – Face of God  

New Identity  

Genesis 32:30 

After over twenty years Jacob was traveling back to Canaan with his family and all the wealth he accumulated.  He sent his servants ahead of him to inform his brother Esau that he was coming.  The servants brought back news that Esau was coming to meet him with four hundred men. Jacob was sore and afraid.  He sent his family ahead of him and he spent the night alone and prayed asking for God’s blessings.  That night God appeared to him and he wrestled with God. When it was early morning, God told him, “Let me go.”  He refused to let go of God and said, “Unless you bless me, I will not let you go.”  That day God blessed Jacob and gave him a new identity.  His name was changed to Israel, Prince of God. Jacob named that place Peniel because he experienced the power of God there.  

3. Succoth – Booths  

New Legacy  

Genesis 33:17, Exodus 12:37, Leviticus 23: 33-44 

Following his long journey, Jacob came to the promised land.  He built a house and made tents for his livestock.  He named that place Succoth, meaning Booths or tents. This place became prominent in Israel.  After many centuries the Israelites came out of bondage from Egypt and the first place they camped is Succoth.  Later when God gave them commandment to celebrate seven feasts, one was Succoth where the Israelites were to live in tents for one week every year to reflect on their life in Egypt and to renew their commitment to God. Our Lord calls us to keep renewing our commitment to Him and be mindful to faithfully follow his path for us.  God will give us a new legacy that will last for generations to come.   

May we follow our Lord faithfully and experience His abundant grace and blessings.  Amen
