The Centrality of Christ in the Trinity

Matthew 28: 16-20

Today we celebrate the Trinity of the Godhead. Scripture teaches us that in the Trinity, Jesus is the central figure. We also acknowledge that no one can fully comprehend the doctrine of the Trinity. We only know what is revealed in the Holy Scriptures.

1. Jesus represents the Father

Matthew 28: 18

Just before His ascension, our Lord declared to the eleven disciples that all authority was given to Him in heaven and on earth. The Jews understood scripture that only God the Father had all authority. Here Jesus declared Himself as equal to God the Father. He emptied himself of divine attributes and laid down His life for the salvation of mankind. Then He rose from the dead and conquered death for us.

The disciples worshipped Jesus. Worshipping Jesus is worshipping God. Before He was crucified Jesus said that He has come to fulfill the Father’s will not His. After His resurrection Jesus declared that all authority was given to Him. We see God the Father only through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Jesus has His own authority

Matthew 28: 19

Our Lord commanded His disciples to go into all the world and make disciples baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus gave them a commandment that was new. They have never read such commandments in the Old Testament. We understand the Centrality of Christ in His authority in giving the disciples a new commandment to go into all the world and preach to all peoples.  Jesus is given a name that is above all names. His name breathes power.  In the name of Jesus, the apostles Peter and Paul performed unbelievable miracles. Others who were not true followers who tried to use the name of Jesus were punished like the seven sons of Sceva.

3. Jesus represents the Holy Spirit

Matthew 28: 20

Our Lord informed the disciples that when He leaves them, He will send the Holy Spirit to be with them. Jesus had told them earlier that where two or three are gathered in His name He is in the midst of them. We realize the centrality of Christ in the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit. In John 16:14 during the upper room discourse Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit will glorify Jesus. He will take from Jesus and give to us.  The Holy Spirit will exalt our Lord Jesus Christ.  So, we understand the centrality of our Lord in the Trinity.  Let us always remember to pray in the Spirit to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
