Sunday Sermon Summary – May 24 2026
The Day of Pentecost
Today we celebrate the birth of the Church. This was the day our Lord had been talking about His disciples. He asked them to stay in Jerusalem until they were empowered from above. Fifty days after His resurrection, the Holy Spirit was given to the one hundred and twenty people who were waiting.
1. The unique ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.
Genesis 1:2
The Holy Bible’s opening verses say that the Holy Spirit was moving above the earth when it was empty and void. In the Old Testament we read that the Holy Spirit was a force from God. In Numbers chapter 11 we read that God wanted all the seventy elders of Israel to be anointed by the Holy Spirit. Samson had a special covenant anointing that the Holy Spirit came upon him and he did humanly impossible things. The Spirit of God was experienced only by chosen people
2. The silent ministry of the Holy Spirit during the Gospels
Matthew 1: 18 Luke 1: 35
During the time of our Lord, the Holy Spirit over shadowed Mary that she bore a Son and named Him Jesus. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. His divinity was confirmed when the Spirit came down on Him during His baptism. He was driven by the Holy Spirit to the wilderness to fast and be tempted by Satan. Jesus displayed His ministry as a model for the church to follow. Jesus said that those who believe in Him will do what He does and even more. His disciples did not fast during the three and a half years of His ministry; but Jesus said that a day will come that He will be taken away from them and then they will fast. Jesus set a model of the work of the Holy Spirit through the Church.
3. The Evident ministry of the Holy Spirit from the day of Pentecost.
Luke 24: 49
The day of Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. The Church was born as foretold in the Old Testament. It was the day of celebration of the harvest. Talking about the Church to the Samaritan woman Jesus said in John 4: 24 that God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in truth. The Bible says in Acts 4: 31 that everyone who was praying was filled with the Holy Spirit. Again, in Acts chapter ten the Bible says that everyone who were gathered at the house of Cornelius were filled with the Holy Spirit. From the day of Pentecost, everyone who seeks God will be filled with the Holy Spirit. There is no discrimination. We need to seek God more and more and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is about being filled with the Holy Spirit. May our Lord help us to be filled with the Holy Spirit as we faithfully follow Him. Amen.
