Sunday Sermon Summary – May 10 2026
I will not leave you orphans
Experiencing God’s Presence
John 14: 15-21
At the last supper our Lord was preparing His disciples for His ascension. He also wanted them to know that He will continue to be with them, but in a different way.
1. Comfort
John 14:18
At the last supper Jesus knew that His disciples will not see Him again in the same manner that they knew Him for three and a half years. After His resurrection Jesus will have a glorified body. For the forty days after His resurrection, Jesus will suddenly appear to them and will disappear. Eventually Jesus will be taken up into heaven before their eyes. So, Jesus promised them that He will not leave them as orphans. He said that He will return to them. Our Lord comforts us when we feel left alone, when we feel betrayed or cheated. He will be with us. Our Lord always comforts His people because He is with us in all situations.
2. Courage
John 14:19
While talking with the eleven disciples, Jesus knew that He was going to be betrayed and handed over to be crucified; but He also knew that He would rise again on the third day. So, Jesus told His disciples that because He lives, they will also live. Our Lord is so loving that He will never leave us helpless. He promised that He will send another comforter who will be with us and in us. Just a few hours before His betrayal Jesus told His disciples to be bold because He lives. If Jesus lives; then we too will live. If Jesus conquered sin, then we too can conquer sin. Jesus also had said that whoever believes in Him will do miracles as He did and even more. Today our Lord encourages us to be bold because we have an advocate who is the Holy Spirit.
3. Companion
John 14:20
Jesus promised the eleven disciples that they will have the Holy Spirit who will be with them always. He will be with us as Jesus was with His disciples for three and a half years. During the three and a half years when Jesus was with His disciples, He protected them; He cared for them, and He counselled them. When Jesus knew that He will be leaving them and will be taken up into heaven; He told them to remain in Jerusalem until they received the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26 says that we do not know what we should pray; so, the Spirit makes intercession for us according to the will of God. Our Lord is our companion. He has sent His Holy Spirit to be our companion. “For He has promised that He will not leave us nor forsake us.” Amen!
