Blessings beyond Belief
John 14: 1-11

In our reading today we observed Jesus inviting His disciples to receive abundant blessings by understanding God’s purpose.  Our Lord began by saying, “Let not your heart be troubled.” Then He taught them some deep truths about himself.  Jesus opened their understanding to hold Him equal to God the Father himself.

1. Believe Me – John 14: 1

Jesus called His disciples to believe in Him. On this night that Jesus was preparing to be betrayed and handed over to death; He called His disciples to believe in Him in a special way than they have believed before.  He instructed them that they must believe in Him just as they believe in the Father. Jesus claimed equality with the Father. This was the revelation Jesus wanted for His disciples. If anyone wanted to believe in God, they must just believe in Jesus. Believing in Jesus is believing in God.  God revealed himself to Moses in the burning bush. Moses asked what His name was. The Lord answered that His name is I Am.  Jesus made the same claim that He is I Am.  We must believe in Jesus as the almighty God.

2. Know Me – John 14: 7

One of His disciples, Thomas expressed his desire to know God the Father. Jesus chided him and said that anyone who knew Jesus will know God the Father.  God is revealed to humanity only through Jesus Christ. Jesus revealed that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.  The apostle Paul wanted to please God the Father and to do so, he expressed his zeal by persecuting Christians.  He chained women and men and put them in prison.  He thought that he knew God. When he was on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians there, he was struck by a bright light in broad daylight and fell to the ground.  He knew it was God; so, he asked, “Who are you, Lord?”  He heard a voice from heaven saying, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.”  That moment Paul realized that to know God is to know Jesus as the Christ.  We must declare to the world that Jesus is the very image of God Himself.

3. See Me – John 14: 9

The apostle Philip requested Jesus to just show him the Father.  Jesus surprised them by saying, “I have been with you so long and how can you ask me to show you the Father? He who has seen me has seen the Father.”  We see God only through Jesus Christ.

Stephen is a good example of someone who saw God. When he was dragged out of the city and was stoned; he witnessed that he saw heavens open and Jesus standing on the right hand of God the Father. Because he saw Jesus Christ; he did not worry about those who were stoning him. He prayed for forgiveness for them. Then he prayed and gave did spirit to God.  It is a deep experience to see God. Many times, our troubles and other challenges can come in the way and block our vision of God. If we draw close to Jesus, we will be drawing close to God. Seeing Jesus means seeing God.

May our Lord help us to believe in God, to know God and to see God through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen!
