Revelation of the Resurrection
Luke 24: 13-35

On the evening after Jesus rose from the grave two disciples were walking from Jerusalem, about 11.25 kms to a village called Emmaus.  Both of them were sad because Jesus was cruelly crucified on the cross. As they were walking, Jesus joined them and began talking with them.

1. Jesus walks along
Luke 24: 15, 16

Our Lord has promised that He will never leave us alone. Jesus was with the two disciples, but they were unable to recognize Him because they were filled with fear and sorrow.  They had not yet experienced the resurrection of our Lord. So Jesus himself walked beside them and asked why they were sad.  When we are filled with negative thoughts we will miss out on the revelation of the resurrection.  Sometimes God will seem like a dead person.  The Holy Bible tells us that when we turn to the right or to the left, we will hear a voice behind us saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”  Isaiah 30:21.

Our resurrected Lord reminds us that He is with us even when we do not recognize Him.

2.  Jesus teaches
Luke 24: 25, 26

Seeing that the disciples were unable to recognize Him, our Lord began to speak to them and called them foolish people who were dull in their minds not realizing that the Messiah needed to be crucified and rise up again on the third day.  The Bible says that Jesus taught them from the law of Moses and all the prophets that pointed to himself. We can have a revelation of the resurrection when we study God’s Word.  The Bible says that their hearts burned within them when they heard Jesus open scripture to them. The Holy Bible should never become boring or uninteresting to us. Every time we read the Bible our hearts must be set ablaze. The Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light for our steps. Psalm 119:105

3.  Jesus breaks the bread
Luke 24: 30, 31

They invited Jesus to stay with them, not knowing who He was. Jesus accepted their invitation and went with them.  At supper, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to the two disciples. Then their eyes were opened; they recognized Him; immediately Jesus vanished.  They experienced a revelation of the resurrection in the breaking of the bread. We must come to the Lord’s table with reverence.  We must come with preparedness. Never come to the Lord’s table unworthily.

1 Corinthians 11: 30 onwards teaches us that we declare His death until He returns. Whenever we come to the altar for Holy Communion, we declare the salvation we have received by the death and resurrection of our Lord.

We don’t need to travel to Jerusalem to see the empty grave of Jesus.  We can experience His resurrection through revelation.  Amen
